BSNL to offer a minimum of 2 Mbps broadband October 1




BSNL will provide a minimum broadband speed of 2 mega bits per second (Mbps) from 1 October onward to its customers at no additional cost, state management.

Currently, the company offers a minimum speed of 512 Kbps and the move is part of efforts to reactivate. BSNL is losing customers in the mobile and fixed phone to private operators. The company lost about 1.78 million wireless Rs 20 lakh and fixed telephony subscribers between March 2014 and March 2015.

Losses for the company stood at Rs 7,600 crore. Given the hyper competition on the scoreboard, the announcement of BSNL may also allow private operators to offer higher speed at a lower cost. It is also expected that the sectoral regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will soon redefine the definition of broadband speed, which currently stands at 512 kbps.

Home scheme here, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that BSNL should have frequent interface with customers and efforts on Monday increased Internet should help define the digital initiative in India which is more for the poor.

"We have increased the Internet speed four times ... we have made sure to 2 Mbps is available in the last mile, which is the customer premises from October 1," said BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava.

Srivastava added that BSNL is on track to revival and the company has added about 15 lakh mobile phone customers in recent months compared to 8.7 lakh subscribers per month.
